In our #Lisboachapter we caught up with Buraka Som Sistema’s Kalaf Ângelo, where the Angolan rapper-MC / poet has lived since 1994.
Buraka Som Sistema are the most famous exponents of kuduro , having fused it with techno beats to create an afro-electro variant called “progressive kuduro” and taken this sound to the four corners of the globe, so we were, of course, eager to find out how they work, the developments in kuduro, the difference, if any, between kuduro in Angola and in Portugal, and when we can expect their new album.

‘Well today is officially the day- my one year blogiversary. I couldn’t be more excited, also a bit surprised, at how fast my blog grew. I can hardly believe that my beloved blog is now one year old. This blog has introduced me to a whole new world of art, fashion and photography. I had no idea how many wonderful friends I would meet and how much I would learn. To celebrate the 1 year anniversary of my beloved blog, I organized a contest with some of my favourite items to thank you all. You’ve helped to make this blog what it is today and here are the fantastic prizes up for grabs. It’s time to bang the drums and blow the bugles.
I hope I will have many years to come in my blogging life, as I realise many blogs I used to surf have shut down and many bloggers throughout my blogging life have stopped blogging altogether due to their own personal reasons. I may also stop one day but I hope that day won’t be soon. Please continue to support me and my blog and do continue to leave your comments. Thanks!!!’

For the 2011 Spring/Summer season Filling Pieces has released four new models/colorways; A Low Top, Boat Top, High Top and Desert Boot – each made of fine leather and nubuck. Avalaible in stores at the end of februari

by Abderrahmane on Wednesday, November 24th, 2010 | 4 Comments |
De spreekwoordelijke kogel is door de kerk. ‘Premier Changed My Life’ is af!
A.A.Z., J.A.E., Tastic, Zo Moeilijk, Zware Jongenz, VSOP, Rocks, Rbdjan, Watts, D.Lipps, Leeroy (Zwart Licht), Murda Turk, Kiddo Cee, MC Regga, Neenah, Rosa Ana, Merage, Jiggy Dje, Free Quincy, Profetic, Brainpower, Gikkels, M.O.

Since the first Museum Night in November 2000, Amsterdam museums stay open until 2AM for one night a year, and welcome thousands of new vistors. For a relatively small city, Amsterdam has a great amount of museums and cultural institutions. This year 45 museums collaborate during Museum Night, and they are all easy to reach by bicycle or public transport.
Apart from seeing the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions there is plenty more to see and do, also for non-Dutch visitors. On this 11th edition you can enjoy live music, DJ’s, dance, performances, film, special tours, food & drinks. One ticket gives entrance to all museums, but be aware that some locations might be crowded. Keep your ticket, because in the period after Museum Night, it allows you free entrance to one of the participating museums.
During the Amsterdam Museum Night especially locals explore the museums in their city; therefore most information is in Dutch. An easy way to create a plan for the night is to enjoy a pre-made route, but you can also check our English flyer, mobile website or Facebook page.

Freshcotton’s inspiration for the fall 2010 and winter 2011 collections are coming from the rugged outdoors. Male and female collections have certain themes in common: Authentic, Heritage and Preppy. The overall look is working with sober colour schemes and subtle details that amplify that so-called rugged outdoor look.
With this creative project we officially introduce ‘FreshCotton Selected’ to the world. The lookbook tells the story of ‘Selected’, thus explaining the main artery of this new segment on the webstore.
‘Freshcotton Selected’ distinguishes itself by offering a platform for refreshing labels from the globe while keeping out a sharp eye on details, materials and an overall high-end look. Although certain pieces are clean and simple, understating for the first impression, we can state that these are future classics with a higher quality level in mind to let you get out and stand out.

The new collection of Guillaume Phillibert’s Filling Pieces is dropping soon. Enough reason for Red McLeod to do a short interview with him. When I first met Guillaume a couple of years ago, he told me that he wanted to design shoes that are sporty, classy and chic at the same time. I think he did pretty well.
*Please note that getting your hands on a pair of these kicks is tricky business. But if your feeling lucky and want to be part of the Filling Pieces family, check out Acht Amsterdam or the Gorrili Rotterdam concept store for your size. For the Parisians check out RZOstore or Black Rainbow as soon as the new collection drops.
Check out the video Red McLeod made in the 8sneakers store in Amsterdam.

After a succesfull set at the PXA B’Ball tournament in Amsterdam, L’Afrique Som Systeme was invited to spin some tracks at the PXA B’Ball tournament and party in Paris, people enjoyed our “warming up” set at the tournament and expectations where high for the party, as a result L’Afrique Som Systeme met does expectations and totally destroyed the party. Premiere Gauo by Magic System turned the crowd wild, people were pounding on their chest while shouting along with the lyrics like there life depended on it. Any old school hiphop track was met by the fiercest pits and any African tune was met by the craziest most awesomest dances. The party had reached a legendary status when the whole crowd started screaming L’Afrique Som Systeme at the same time the music stopped. #ParisChapterdeux ended on high. A Major Big up to the PXA/Pain O’ Chokolat crew, Berlin fam Blackrainbow fam, Merystache fam, and Montaignstreet fam for this crazy weekend. La famille de la classe!
One thing is certained, the French really know how to party!

On the last day of our #Parischapterdeux the good folks of Blackrainbow invited us and a bunch of cool people to have some brunch at their store. This is the same store that will carry Amsterdam’s own Filling Pieces from next season on.
The Blackrainbow brunch was the perfect place to recover from the crazy Pigalle party from the night before.

Do you remember that not too long ago we blogged about the PXA in Amsterdam? That crazy basketball tournament with teams from Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin? Well, last weekend Blackrainbow and Pigalle hosted the Paris edition of the tournament. Teams such as Roucreation, Main de fer, Gants de velours, Le closet, Pigalle, BKRW, SOTO/MADE (Berlin), RBF(Amsterdam), CANDY and Colette competed against each other on the Pigalle home court.
The mens team of Pigalle and the ladies team of Le Closet won the tournament this time. The next PXA will be held in Berlin during the first week of September. I could bet a lot of money that we will be there.

L’Afrique Som System got to spin some tracks with the boys from Pigalle, SFFRMKRS and the Flexican. All of us absolutely killed it and it got to the point that six riot vans were cotching in front of the garden where the party was and threatened to shut it down. We continued much to their annoyance and they gave us a last warning before they would beat us to pulp. But as true heros, everyone kept on partying until the Polizei really got their mean faces on. The Party was epic the whole experience was enormous, next stop Paris for another PXA chapter

Our second Daily Paper trip led us to Berlin. We arrived on the 7th and stayed untill the 10th of July. During those days we had a very special tour guide, the lovely Toyah Siegel guided us through the streets of Berlin.
Together with our Green Paper Boys fam we visited the Bread & Butter fair in this great city. We made some new contacts and gained allot of inspiration during the fair.
Futher more L’ Afrique Som Systeme crashed the official Bread & Butter party, more about that in the next post ”Sport & Street BBQ at Hedi”.

Metro54 invited us to host the pop up urban cafe at No Limit in Amsterdam. The evening kicked off with a interesting documentary film ”Downtown Calling” examining the evolution of New York in the 70s and 80s was at the heart and how much influence it had and still has in music, art and clothing industry. It was a long film and though our concentration curve was severely challenged, it was very interesting none the less particularly the parts about Hip Hop and Graffiti.
After the doc the Moeimakers (Dutch rap group) started recording a track, with a total of 3 verses. The whole track was preformed at the end of the evening, this was part of the urban cafe program. The one and only Spec Boogie from Brooklyn, NY, was the special guest. He is well known for his fascinating word play in his lyrics, an is most definitely an inspiration to the newest members of the Hip Hop generation working in the areas of music and fashion. Daily Paper had the opportunity to interview him and during the “Talks With Spec” he revealed his views on Hip Hop and gave us some tips. After answering questions about his life and music. DJ Lee and L’Afrique Som Systeme closed the evening with some fresh sounds.

We were asked to spin some tracks at the PXA basketball tournament in Amsterdam. It was a very competitive tournament. With teams from Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam and Frankfurt; Pigalle, BKRW, Sfeermakers, Acht, Nike Sportswear, K1X, BBB, Candy and Team Soto! During the day we turned up the energy level with some bangers. This created a great vibe and atmosphere.

You may know K’Naan from his new World Cup song “Waving Flag” or his albums: The Dusty Foot Philosopher and Troubadour. He is currently gaining universal acclaim for his entailment of the struggle that faces Somali’s and other Africans a like. Last year we interviewed him during his european tour, and got to dig a little deeper in this mind of this (musical) genius.
